Los Angeles has backed a plan for a ban on cultivating or selling genetically modified plants.

City News Service says the City Council voted Tuesday to draft a ban that would cover seeds, fruit trees, and plants.

That would include varieties of corn and other crops that are designed to resist pests or pesticides.

The Northern California city of Arcata in Humboldt County already has such a ban in place.

Critics say genetically modified crops haven't been proven safe and reduce genetic diversity. Supporters say they are safe and can help provide food in areas where unmodified crops can't flourish.
