Alaska Airlines said Monday that it has ordered 10 planes from Boeing for $990 million.

The airline said the new planes, the 737-900ERs, will replace its 737-400s and help it save money. The new planes hold 25 percent more passengers and use the same amount of fuel.

Including the new order, Alaska Airlines has 74 jets on order from Chicago-based The Boeing Co.

Alaska Airlines is a subsidiary of Seattle-based Alaska Air Group Inc., which also owns Horizon Air.
