TOKYO, July 15 (Kyodo) -- JX Holdings Inc. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said Tuesday they will launch a carbon dioxide capture project in the U.S. state of Texas to boost production at an oil field.

The Japanese companies said the project will capture CO2 from flue gas released by a coal-fired power generation plant of U.S. energy company NRG Energy Inc. in Texas and inject it into the West Ranch oil field, around 130 kilometers from the plant.

By using the captured CO2 to apply pressure, the oil field will be able to boost production from around 500 barrels per day to around 12,000 barrels per day, the companies estimate.

The system, slated for completion in 2016, is also expected to cut CO2 emissions from the plant by about 1.6 million tons per year.

JX and NRG Energy have set up a joint venture for the project.
