BMW Recalls 1.6M Cars

DETROIT (AP) -- BMW is expanding a recall of its most popular models to fix an air bag problem that is hitting much of the global auto industry.

The German automaker says it will recall 1.6 million 3-Series cars from model years 2000 to 2006 across the world, including 574,000 in the U.S.

The company said Wednesday that it's a precaution because other automakers using similar systems have reported problems.

Air bag inflators in systems made by Takata Corp. can rupture. If that happens, the bags might not work properly, and shards could fly out and cause injury. Continue reading...

Tesla Settles Lemon Lawsuit

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Tesla Motors has settled a lawsuit alleging the company sold a defective electric car to a Wisconsin doctor.

The deal calls for the California-based company to pay Franklin physician Robert Montgomery nearly $127,000 to cover the car's cost, his taxes and his attorney fees.

Montgomery filed the lawsuit in Milwaukee County Circuit Court in April alleging his 2013 SP Sedan was in the shop for more than 30 days with various problems. Attorney Vince Megna, who touts himself as the lemon law king, handled the case for Montgomery. Continue reading...

Microsoft To Cut Up To 18,000 Jobs

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Microsoft announced the biggest layoffs in its history Thursday, saying it will cut 18,000 jobs or 14 percent of its workforce as it streamlines its Nokia mobile device business to focus on using the Windows Phone operating system.

The news sent Microsoft's stock up nearly 2 percent in morning trading.

Although the job cuts had been expected, the extent of them was a surprise. It's the boldest move by CEO Satya Nadella since he took the reins from Steve Ballmer in February. In a public email to employees Thursday, he said the changes were needed for the company to "become more agile and move faster." Continue reading...

Tracy Morgan Sues Wal-Mart Over Fatal Crash

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Former "Saturday Night Live" star Tracy Morgan has been released from a rehabilitation facility as he heals from serious injuries he suffered in a car crash that left a fellow comedian dead, his spokesman said Saturday.

Morgan will continue his recovery at home with an "aggressive outpatient program," spokesman Lewis Kay said.

The former "30 Rock" star suffered a broken leg and broken ribs when the limousine van he was riding in was hit from behind June 7 by a Wal-Mart truck on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The wreck killed 62-year-old comedian James McNair, who went by the name Jimmy Mack. Comedian Ardley Fuqua and another passenger, Jeffrey Millea, were injured. Continue reading...

Fight Continues Over Obama Lawsuit

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Constitutional lawyers backing a planned House Republican lawsuit against President Barack Obama told a congressional committee Wednesday that the action is justified because Obama has exceeded his powers in carrying out his health care law.

Attorneys allied with Democrats in opposing the election-year suit said it's the GOP that's going too far by trying to resolve a political dispute by handing the question to the federal courts to decide.

The lawyers appeared Wednesday before the House Rules Committee, which is considering Republican-written legislation authorizing the House to file the lawsuit. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has said he wants to take legal action because Obama has abused his authority to carry out laws Congress approves, specifically by delaying a health care law requirement that many employers provide medical coverage for their workers.
