N.Y. Plant Among First To Do Risk Assessment For Quakes

A nuclear plant operated by Entergy Corp. in the New York City suburbs will be among the first to do an in-depth analysis of its risk from earthquakes.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- A nuclear plant operated by Entergy Corp. in the New York City suburbs will be among the first to do an in-depth analysis of its risk from earthquakes.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Friday that the Indian Point plant in Buchanan is among 10 plants, out of 60 plants east of the Rockies, that must do an analysis by 2017.

The commission said all the plants are safe and the priority list is not a risk ranking.

Plants in the West get more time because the quake risk there is more complex. Priority is partly based on updated seismic information compared to information available when a plant was built.

A 2011 earthquake and tsunami crippled a nuclear plant in Japan.

The NRC established a priority because of the limited number of experts available.
