DALE, S.C. (AP) -- Some Beaufort County residents are worried a proposed jellyfish processing plant would cause problems with wastewater released into local waterways.
Several hundred people turned out Thursday for a public hearing on plans by Carolina Jelly Ball LLC to set up the plant near Dale. The plant would process cannonball jellyfish by drying them before they are shipped to Asian markets, where they are considered a delicacy.
Many in the crowd questioned what effect wastewater from the process would have on a local creek and the wildlife in the streams.
An environmental engineer representing the company says discharge cannot be studied until it is created. But he said projections show the wastewater will not have a negative impact on the environment.
