AGs Want Tamper Proof Generic Painkillers
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi Attorney General Jim and 41 other states legal officers are asking the government to require manufacturers of generic prescription pain relievers to develop tamper-resistant versions of their products.
Hood and the other attorneys general say in a news release that prescription drug abuse has reached epidemic levels in many states.
The request came in at letter to the Food and Drug Administration.
In their letter the attorneys general urged the FDA to ensure the generic painkillers have abuse-deterrent properties.
Hood says attorneys general across the country are leading the effort to combat prescription abuse by sponsoring prescription drug-take back efforts, spearheading legislative and law enforcement initiatives in their respective jurisdictions, and mandating state level prescription drug monitoring programs.
