TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. will construct a new factory to produce larger fuselages for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, its officials said Tuesday.
The heavy machinery and engineering company will begin construction in 2014 on land adjacent to its existing facilities in Yatomi, Aichi Prefecture, and plans to start production as early as in 2015.
It plans to invest several tens of billions of yen into the factory.
Boeing plans to deliver a 787 with a longer fuselage and increased seating from 2018.
Kawasaki Heavy makes the current model of 787 fuselages at its Yatomi factory, but will require a new plant for the larger version.
The factory will include large-scale equipment to cure the carbon fiber used in the 787's body, the officials said.
