Nissan, Honda Car Sales Continue To Fall In China

Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. reported Tuesday continued falls in their March car sales in China, with sales of Nissan cars dropping 16.6 percent year on year and Honda cars 6.6 percent. Toyota Motor Corp. earlier reported an 11.7 percent drop in March car sales in China.

BEIJING (Kyodo) -- Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. reported Tuesday continued falls in their March car sales in China, with sales of Nissan cars dropping 16.6 percent year on year and Honda cars 6.6 percent.

Toyota Motor Corp. earlier reported an 11.7 percent drop in March car sales in China.

The sagging sales figures of the three top Japanese carmakers apparently reflect continued Chinese aversion to buy Japanese cars amid strains in diplomatic ties between the two countries over a territorial dispute in the East China Sea.

Nissan said it sold 110,000 cars in China in March; Honda 61,108; Toyota 75,900.

Sales of new Nissan cars in China in January and February fell 14.1 percent from the previous year, while Honda reported a 4.1 percent fall in the first two months of this year.

Sales of Japanese cars in China took a sharp plunge after extensive anti-Japanese protests swept through major Chinese cities last September after the Japanese government bought some of the disputed Senkaku islands, called Diaoyu in China, in the East China Sea from a private Japanese owner.
