CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Caterpillar says it plans to close its Summerville remanufacturing plant next year, a move that will put 280 people out of work.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/ZNwz6f) the company said Monday that the decision came after an extensive strategic review of the business.
The factory tears down, recycles and rebuilds heavy-duty transmissions and related components for original equipment makers, which then resell the parts to aftermarket buyers.
Full-time Summerville employees will receive severance packages, and the company said it plans to work with agencies that provide outplacement services.
Caterpillar has other plants in Sumter and Greenville, and a logistics operation in Fountain Inn.
