Mazda Recalling Atenza Passenger Cars

Mazda Motor Corp. reported to the transport ministry Tuesday it is recalling 8,902 of its latest model Atenza passenger cars due to an electric system fault that may cause fire. Subject to the recall are Atenzas manufactured between last October and this month.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Mazda Motor Corp. reported to the transport ministry Tuesday it is recalling 8,902 of its latest model Atenza passenger cars due to an electric system fault that may cause fire.

Subject to the recall are Atenzas manufactured between last October and this month.

About 6,700 units of the model have been sold overseas, mainly in Europe.

It was reported in Belgium in January that a fire broke out beneath the driver's seat while the vehicle parked, according to the ministry. No accidents or troubles have been reported so far within Japan.

The ministry said that a fault has been found in a device which adjusts voltage when electricity is sent from the power generator to the vehicle's battery, which could result in a short-circuiting and cause fire.
