NY Semiconductor Maker Adding NY R&D Facility

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announcing the project Tuesday, says it is expected to result in at least 500 new jobs at the new technology center on the company's campus in rural Saratoga County, as well as 500 more jobs at its administration and manufacturing buildings.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor manufacturer, says it plans to build a new research and development facility at its factory complex in upstate New York.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announcing the project Tuesday, says it is expected to result in at least 500 new jobs at the new technology center on the company's campus in rural Saratoga County, as well as 500 more jobs at its administration and manufacturing buildings.

GlobalFoundries says its investments reflect the shift from personal computers to a market more focused on mobile devices.

California-based GlobalFoundries was spun off from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. The company began building its factory complex in Malta in 2009 and currently employs about 2,000 people.

A company spokesman says they expect to begin the new construction this spring and finish in late 2014.
