Hitachi To Build Steam Turbine Generators In India

Wed, 01/23/2013 - 8:35am

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Hitachi Ltd. said Wednesday it will build two steam turbine generators for a supercritical pressure thermal power plant to be built in India.

Hitachi, which is trying to boost its presence in India, said it has received orders for the generators from India's BGR Energy Systems Ltd. and National Thermal Power Corp. for the envisioned 800-megawatt coal-fired thermal power plant.

The move comes as India plans to double the capacity for power facilities to 330 gigawatts by 2017 to address the shortage of electricity in certain areas of the fast-growing country.

The Tokyo-based company said the generators are scheduled to begin operating in 2016 at the plant in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

Hitachi started its partnership with BGR Energy Systems in September 2010.

Exactly a year later, BGR Energy Systems acquired preferential negotiating rights for four steam turbine generators in two locations. Hitachi said its latest orders account for two of them.
