El Paso, Texas — Boeing has announced today that it will reduce the workforce at the company’s El Paso facilities by 160 employees. The transition will be completed by the end of 2014, and the company will simultaneously reduce occupied square footage by 50 percent by moving from three buildings to one.

In a statement, Derek McLuckey, director of Boeing Network Operations, said, “This difficult decision was based on a thorough study of the current and future business environment and the need to remain competitive. We recognize this will affect the lives of many of the highly skilled men and women who work here, so we will do everything possible to assist our employees, their families and our community through this difficult time.”

Company officials said the affected employees will receive assistance with finding jobs within Boeing or at another company, as well as financial counseling. Some will have the option to retire.

Despite cutting the El Paso workforce down to 210 employees, the company reiterated its commitment to manufacturing in Texas, where it still has 6,000 employees at a variety of locations.
