NAM Urges Senate to Pass Russia PNTR Bill

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) sent a Key Vote letter to senators today urging passage of the Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal Act (H.R. 6156). This legislation will grant the United States Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) with Russia to grow U.S. exports and secure market access to help create American jobs.

Washington, D.C., December 5, 2012 — The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) sent a Key Vote letter to senators today urging passage of the Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal Act (H.R. 6156). This legislation will grant the United States Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) with Russia to grow U.S. exports and secure market access to help create American jobs.

“After overwhelming support in the House for PNTR, the Senate can now move us another step closer to ensuring market access in Russia for manufacturers in the United States,” said Alcoa Inc. Vice President for Global Public and Government Affairs and NAM Russia Trade Relations Task Force Chairman Daniel Cruise. “The fast-growing Russian market offers a tremendous opportunity for the growth of U.S.-manufactured goods exports. The faster we can get this legislation to the President for his signature, the sooner U.S. manufacturers can begin to realize the benefits of Russia’s WTO membership.”

“This week the Senate can pass a jobs bill that will help manufacturers increase exports and level the playing field in the ninth largest economy in the world,” said NAM Senior Vice President for Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse. “We have a significant opportunity for growth in the Russian market as last year only 5 percent of Russian imports were U.S. goods. The President’s Export Council says we can double exports to Russia in the next five years with PNTR. Failure to pass this PNTR legislation will only set us further behind in the growing Russian market and hurt American jobs and manufacturing workers.”
