Legislation Will Boost Competitiveness and Support Manufacturing Jobs

WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) joined 104 businesses and business groups on a letter to congressional leaders urging the passage of the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB). The MTB is a competitiveness bill that will support and grow manufacturing jobs in the United States.

“Passing the MTB will reduce the cost of manufacturing in the United States and help manufacturers grow their businesses and improve their competitiveness in an increasingly challenging global marketplace,” said NAM Vice President for International Economic Affairs Linda Dempsey. “It is currently 20 percent more expensive to manufacture in the United States compared to our major trading partners, and failure to pass the MTB will only add to those costs. Congress has the opportunity to pass a bipartisan bill that will support and create jobs and level the playing field globally for manufacturers in the United States.”

Manufacturers of all sizes use the vital tariff suspensions contained in the MTB to obtain raw materials, proprietary inputs and other products that are not available domestically. Without the MTB, these companies’ production costs will substantially increase, damaging their competitiveness and forcing them to pass on these higher costs to consumers. This will translate into lost jobs for American workers.
