NEW YORK (AP) -- Marvell Technology Group Ltd. said Thursday that it plans to fight a jury's verdict against it in a patent case brought by Carnegie Mellon University, which was awarded $1.17 billion in damages from the chip-maker.

The company's stock fell 22 cents, or 3 percent, to $7.18 in premarket trading, after dropping 10 Wednesday on news of the ruling. The Santa Clara, Calif., company said it hasn't determined yet what impact the trial's outcome will have on its business in the current quarter, which ends on Feb. 2.

The verdict follows a lawsuit filed by the Pittsburgh university in 2009 over patents related to a type of "noise predictive detection" that is used to detect data stored on a hard-disk drive.

The company said that it uses its own patented technology, which it developed.

The case was tried in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Marvell will try to overturn the Pittsburgh jury's decision in motions before the district court, and may appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.

Marvell said that there should be no disruption to its business or customers as a result of the verdict.
