ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines is ordering up to 70 aircraft from Bombardier, which could be worth about $3.29 billion.

Bombardier Aerospace said Thursday that Delta placed an order for 40 NextGen regional jets and has options for an additional 30 CRJ900 NextGen aircraft.

Bombardier Inc., based in Montreal, makes planes and trains.

The 40 jet order is valued at about $1.85 billion, based on the list price of the aircraft. If the options are converted to firm orders, then the deal could be worth about $3.29 billion, Bombardier said.

Delta Air Lines Inc. said that the order will allow it to replace less efficient single-class 50-seat planes with new two-class 76-seat aircraft. The Atlanta company said that the new planes will have more first-class seats.
