BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz says an owner of the Sparrows Point steel mill will raze the closed plant.

He said Thursday's announcement marks the end of a more than century-old tradition of steelmaking in Baltimore County.

Sparrows Point, which at its heyday during and after World War II employed some 30,000 workers, has been closed since its then-owner, RG Steel, filed for bankruptcy in May. Some 2,000 workers were idled then.

Hilco Industrial, a company that specialized in liquidations, bought the mill.

Kamenetz said Hilco informed him Thursday that despite efforts by Hilco to sell the plant for steel making, the company found no buyers. The county executive says Hilco will sell all the mill's remaining assets and raze the property.
