TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Confectionery maker Ezaki Glico Co. said Friday it will enter the cosmetics market by launching skincare products containing glycogen, a carbohydrate that has been found to be good for retaining skin moisture.

The company will sell a lotion and cream under the "gg" brand through a mail-order service from Wednesday, aiming for sales of 1 billion yen within five years.

Ezaki Glico, named after glycogen, used in its caramel candies, said the substance had been found to be effective in retaining moisture, leading it to develop purer glycogen for skincare items.

A third-party survey showed that the products could contribute to increased moisture retention and firmer skin, it said.

The lotion and cream will be sold for 5,250 yen and 6,300 yen, respectively.
