9 Hurt In Texas City Chemical Leak

Thu, 10/25/2012 - 9:25am

TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) -- Officials say nine people have been hurt in a chemical tank leak that restricted outdoor activities in a Southeast Texas city for hours.

Emergency authorities in Texas City lifted the shelter-in-place order shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday in a storage tank spill involving hydrochloric acid.

Homeland Security coordinator Bruce Clawson says four firefighters and five workers at the Dallas Group of America Inc. unit were transported to a hospital. Clawson says all suffered acid exposure with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

A storage tank leaked around 11 p.m. Wednesday near the Port of Texas City. A shelter-in-place order for the city of 45,000 advised people to stay inside, turn off air conditioning and keep windows and doors closed.

Officials with the Dallas Group didn't immediately return a message Thursday.
