DOUGLAS, Mich. (AP) — Furniture maker Haworth Inc. plans to close a plant in southwestern Michigan by the first quarter of 2014 and shift production lines at some other facilities.

MLive.com and The Holland Sentinel report the Holland-based company announced plans Thursday to close the Douglas plant. Haworth says the aim is to improve efficiency.

The company plans to shift fabrication lines from a steel components plant in Holland to a Haworth steel plant in Big Rapids. As space at the Holland plant opens up, beginning in early 2013, most of the current operations from the Douglas plant are expected to consolidate at the Holland facility.

Several hundred employees are affected. They have the option of moving, taking another company job or taking a voluntary severance package.
