Va. County To Recover Jobs Lost By Mill Closure

The opening of a Green Mountain Coffee Roasters plant in the area will create 800 jobs, a large portion of the 1,100 lost when International Paper closed doors.

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (AP) — A new study predicts that two new businesses in Isle of Wight County will replace most of the 1,100 jobs lost when an International Paper paper mill closed in 2010.

But the study by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership says localities won't receive as much tax revenue.

International Paper converted its mill into a fluff pulp plant that employs about 220 workers. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters plans to open a roasting, grinding and packaging facility that will employ 800 workers.

County Supervisor Dee Dee Darden tells the Daily Press (http://bit.ly/MVydvd ) that the companies will draw other businesses and revenue to the county.

On Monday, Gov. McDonnell announced that Tak Investments Inc. plans to open a recycled tissue operation in a vacant section of International Paper's mill, creating 85 jobs.
