Former Va. Paper Plant Reopens As Fluff Pulp Mill

International Paper spent nearly $90 million to convert the facility after it laid off more than 1,100 people there when it closed the mill in 2010.

FRANKLIN, Va. (AP) — A former paper plant in Franklin is starting a new chapter as a fluff pulp mill.

WVEC-TV (https://bit.ly/N24jnM ) reports that the mill has begun producing fluff pulp. It employs more than 200 workers.

More than 1,100 people lost their jobs when International Paper closed the paper mill in 2010. The company spent nearly $90 million to convert the facility to manufacture fluff pulp.

Fluff pulp is used in super absorbent products such as diapers, feminine-hygiene products and medical wipes.

When the plant reaches full production, it will make about 840 tons of fluff pulp per day.

International Paper chairman and CEO Joe Faraci says the mill will further strengthen the company's presence in the worldwide fluff paper market.
