Bridge Builder To Open Facility In Virginia

Bridge building company Big R Bridge plans to invest $1.9 million and hire 30 workers for the facility to manufacture prefabricated bridge parts.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Bridge building company Big R Bridge is planning to open a manufacturing operation in Washington County, creating more than 30 jobs over the next three years.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday the company plans to invest $1.9 million for the facility to manufacture prefabricated bridge parts. It will be the company's first operation in Virginia.

Colorado-based Big R Bridge is a subsidiary of the Canadian company Atlantic Industries Limited. It has handled more than 10,000 installations in its 40-plus-year history and creates more than 300 bridges a year. Officials say the project marks an important step in the company's East Coast expansion plans.

McDonnell approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund for the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission also approved $125,000 in funding.
