ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. (AP) — Unilever PLC recalled pints of Ben & Jerry's chocolate nougat crunch ice cream because an allergen advisory statement is missing from the packaging.
The consumer products company said Tuesday that the following statement should have been included: Allergy Information: Fudge covered wafer pieces have been manufactured on shared equipment that processes peanuts and tree nuts.
The recall does not include 2.4 gallon containers of chocolate nougat crunch served at Ben & Jerry's franchised Scoop Shops.
Unilever said that no illnesses have been reported so far, but that people that have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts or tree nuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat the recalled product.
Ben & Jerry's has issued an alert through the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network and notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of the recall.
The recalled ice cream was sold across the U.S. through various retail stores in containers with the UPC code 7684020899. The date codes include JUL1113BJ1, JUL1213BJ1, AUG0113BJ1, AUG0213BJ1, AUG2313BJ1, AUG2413BJ1, AUG2513BJ1, SEP2013BJ1, SEP2113BJ1 and OCT2313BJ1. Date codes are located on the bottom of the pint containers.
No other Ben & Jerry products are impacted by the recall.
Consumers that purchased any of the pints involved in the recall should throw away the ice cream, rinse out the container and cut out and keep the UPC code. Consumers can then call 877-270-7397 to request a replacement coupon.
