Recycler Admits Failing To Disclose Air Violations

Spectro Alloys Corp. faces more than $1 million in fines, civil penalties and required plant upgrades for violating clean air laws and trying to conceal it.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A Rosemount alumnimum recycling operation faces more than $1 million in fines, civil penalties and required plant upgrades for violating clean air laws and trying to conceal it.

Spectro Alloys Corp. pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court and was fined $500,000. A pending civil enforcement agreement would cost the company another $600,000 and would require installation of new pollution-control equipment.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Spectro pleaded guilty to two counts of violating the federal false statements statute. The charges accused Spectro of failing to disclose violations of federal Clean Air Act emissions limits.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/KBtS0Z) reports Spectro issued a statement saying the company acknowledges that an air quality engineering test in 2006 should have been reported, and the company is "sorry for the mistake."
