Electric Boat Expanding In Rhode Island

Executives at Electric Boat, the Navy's primary submarine contractor, intend to dedicate its new 146,000-square-foot building Tuesday.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Electric Boat, the U.S. Navy's primary contractor for submarines, is opening a new production facility at Rhode Island's Quonset Point.

Executives at Electric Boat intend to dedicate its new 146,000-square-foot building Tuesday. Gov. Lincoln Chafee and members of the state's Congressional delegation plan to attend the event.

The submarine contractor says the facility will house hundreds of employees who work on major submarine components.

Electric Boat is a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp. in Falls Church, Va. The company employees more than 10,000 workers at Quonset Point and Groton, Conn., where the Navy has a submarine base and school.
