Chemical Fire Engulfs Ark. Fake Fingernail Factory

The Onyx Laboratories plant in Maumelle is burning, forcing the evacuation of the plant and nearby buildings.

MAUMELLE, Ark. (AP) -- A factory that produces artificial fingernails and other chemical products in central Arkansas is burning, forcing the evacuation of the plant and nearby buildings.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management says 40,000 gallons of acetone is on fire Thursday at the Onyx Laboratories plant in Maumelle, just north of Little Rock.

North Little Rock Fire Lt. Gary Williams says there are no reports of injuries in the blaze that started around 9 a.m. Williams said shortly before 11 a.m. that firefighters were still working to put out the blaze.

Williams says several small businesses around Onyx have been evacuated.

Exposure to excess levels of acetone can irritate the eyes and breathing passages.
