(Seattle, Washington- September 27, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing changes to the final cleanup decision for the FMC Operable Unit of the Eastern Michaud Flats Superfund site, which lies largely within the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Southeastern Idaho. The public is invited to submit comments on EPA’s proposed changes until October 26, 2011.

According to Dennis McLerran, EPA Regional Administrator in Seattle, changes to the original cleanup decision are needed based on new information gathered since the site’s official “Record of Decision” was signed in 1998.

“We are proposing changes that we believe make the cleanup plan stronger and more protective,” said McLerran. “With the FMC plant and buildings removed, we have a clearer picture of what needs to be done to protect the community, site workers and the Portneuf River. Long-term monitoring is central to the success of this cleanup and we look forward to working with the Tribe and the community to accomplish that goal.”

The public is invited to send comments (by October 26th) regarding the Proposed Plan to:
Mr. Chris Bellovary
US EPA Region 10, ECL-113
1200 Sixth Ave, Suite 900
