Ohio's Spangler Candy Adds Candy Cane Jobs

The company said it will spend $400,000 to upgrade and install two candy cane production lines at its plant amid an "extremely tough" market.

BRYAN, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio's Spangler Candy Co. is adding jobs and space to produce more candy canes sold under brand names such as Jelly Belly and Cinnabon.

The company said in a statement Monday that it will spend $400,000 to upgrade and install two candy cane production lines at its plant in Bryan, the northwest Ohio community where Spangler is based. Officials say they expect the expansion will create up to 30 new jobs in time for the 2012 candy cane season.

Company Chairman Dean Spangler says competition in the global candy cane business is "extremely tough" but Spangler is on the right track.

Spangler was already adding to its Bryan plant because of growth in its Dum Dums lollipops business.
