Siemens To Build $800M UK Wind Farm

German engineering company says it has won a contract to build a large offshore wind farm for British power companies in the Irish Sea.

BERLIN (AP) -- German engineering company Siemens AG says it has won a contract to build a large offshore wind farm for British power companies in the Irish Sea.

The company said Monday the 108 wind mills are set to go online in 2014 and produce enough electricity for about 300,000 British households.

Utility ScottishPower Renewables said the value of the contract with Siemens for the West of Duddon Sands project exceeds 500 million pounds ($800 million).

Jens-Peter Saul, the chief executive of Siemens Wind Power unit, says "offshore wind farms are one of the fastest growing technologies of power generation."

Siemens says the project for DONG Energy and Scottish Power Renewables located some 9 miles southwest of the Barrow-in-Furness coastline will be one of the world's largest offshore wind farms.
