Siemens Gets China Wind Farm Contract

German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG says it has been awarded a contract to develop an offshore wind farm in eastern China.

BERLIN (AP) -- German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG says it has been awarded a contract to develop an offshore wind farm in eastern China.

The Munich company said in a statement Tuesday the contract calls for 21 2.3-megawatt windmills, for a project off the coast of Jiangsu province. It did not provide a value for the contract.

Siemens says the project, signed with a subsidiary of the China Longyuan Power Group Corporation Ltd., will be completed by the end of 2011.

The company says the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association plans to increase offshore wind energy production from five gigawatts to 30 gigawatts by 2015.

Jens-Peter Saul, the chief executive of Siemens Wind Power unit, says "this contract is an important milestone for our entry into China's quickly growing market for wind energy."
