Brimar Limited Chooses GE to Equip New Patrol Vehicles With Video
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA June 30, 2011 GE Intelligent Platforms today announced that it had secured orders from Brimar Limited of Manchester, England for a quantity of GE’s CR12 6U CompactPCI® single board computers. The computers will form part of an intelligent display driver that will provide ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) video information from vehicle-mounted cameras to the crew of the Foxhound Light Protected Patrol Vehicle (LPPV), as part of the vehicle’s Thales-supplied electronic architecture. Brimar is producing 200 Foxhound vehicles to meet a UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) for patrol vehicles for Afghanistan.
“The urgent requirement for the new Foxhound meant that it was vital for Brimar to minimize program risk,” said Richard Kirk, Product Manager, Military and Aerospace Embedded Computing at GE Intelligent Platforms. “GE was able to offer not only an ideal hardware solution in the CR12, but also loaner boards and extended technical support that enabled Brimar to make the quick start necessary for the very tight schedule to be met.”
The CR12 is a rugged 6U CompactPCI single board computer featuring an Intel® Core™ i7-610E processor operating at up to 2.53 GHz. As well as supporting up to 8GBytes of soldered DDR3 SDRAM with ECC, it provides support for two PCI-X® PMCs or two x8 PCI Express® XMCs. Connectivity includes two front Gigabit Ethernet ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, VGA, five USB ports, two DVI ports, three SATA ports and two COM ports. It is available in five ruggedization levels, from benign/office to fully rugged convection cooled.
The Foxhound is a 7.5t lightweight mine-protected vehicle and is expected to provide better protection and flexibility than previous generation vehicles. Foxhound is based on Force Protection Europe’s Ocelot vehicle, which has been jointly developed with Ricardo. Other collaborators on Foxhound include Formaplex, DSG, Thales, QinetiQ and Sula. Ocelot has also been down-selected as a candidate for the Australian protected mobility vehicle – light (PMV-L) as part of the Land 121 phase 4 project.
