Westar Energy CEO To Retire

Westar Energy says its chairman and chief executive officer plans to retire later this year, and the board has named another top executive as his successor.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Westar Energy says its chairman and chief executive officer plans to retire later this year, and the utility's board has named another top executive as his successor.

The company made the announcements Thursday during its annual shareholders meeting. Westar is the largest electric company in Kansas, with 687,000 customers.

The departing CEO is William Moore, who's led Westar since 2007. Moore's replacement will be Mark Ruelle (Roo-EHL'), the company's executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Company spokeswoman Gina Penzig said Moore has not set a specific date for his retirement.

Both Moore and Ruelle returned to Westar late in 2002 and early 2003. The company abandoned a strategy of diversifying its interests to go back to being only an electric utility following the tenure of former CEO David Wittig.
