OSHA Fines Colorado Mill

Federal workplace safety regulators are proposing $49,900 in fines for Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel seamless tube mill over alleged safety violations.

DENVER (AP) -- Federal workplace safety regulators are proposing $49,900 in fines for the Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel seamless tube mill in Pueblo, Colo., over alleged safety violations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday the mill has been cited with one repeat violation, five serious and two other-than-serious violations after an inspection.

OSHA alleges employees were exposed to the risk of amputation from rotating machine parts. Evraz received a similar citation in July 2009. Other alleged violations include accusations that the mill didn't provide adequate guarding of belts and pulleys, provide proper storage of flammable materials, protect workers from exposure to electrical hazards or maintain fire extinguishers.

Evraz Inc. spokeswoman Kelly Brossart said Evraz in Pueblo has a longstanding, positive safety record and that resolving concerns there will be a top priority.
