LONDON (AP) -- BP PLC says it is increasing production capacity for purified terephthalic acid, a raw material used to make textiles, bottles and film products, at its Zhuhai Chemical Co. site in China.

BP said Thursday that production will increase to around 1.7 million tons per year, from 1.5 million tons currently, from the first quarter of next year.

BP also says it is in the early planning stages for a new PTA plant at the Zhuhai site in Guangdong Province that would have a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year. If approved by shareholders and the Chinese government, BP hopes to have the new plant online in 2014.

The Zhuhai site is a joint venture between BP and Zhuhai Port Co., Ltd.
