OSHA Fines Plastics Company For Safety Violations

Federal authorities have cited Spartech Plastics for exposing workers to unguarded machinery and electrocution and amputation hazards.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) -- Federal authorities have cited an Evanston plastics company that they say endangered employees through 16 serious safety violations.

The action against Spartech Plastics LLC comes from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA says the company exposed workers to unguarded machinery and electrocution and amputation hazards.

OSHA has proposed a fine totaling $54,500. Spartech has 15 days to comply or contest the penalty.

OSHA area director Diane Turek in Chicago says employers who ignore OSHA standards "are inviting tragedy into the workplace."

Spartech makes custom sheet and rollstock plastic at the Evanston plant and employs about 100 workers there. The company did not immediately respond to phone and e-mail requests for comment.
