One of the biggest wind gear manufacturers in the world, Finland-based Moventas, will build up wind gear assembly capacity in USA. The new facility in Portland will serve the growing customer demand in the USA markets by the end of the year 2010.
With the investment in Portland, Moventas is taking a significant step expanding its global manufacturing and assembly offering for both wind turbine manufacturers and gear service customers. USA as one of the fastest growing wind markets was a natural choice of location.
- Expanding our existing facilities in Portland for wind gear assembly is the first step. The initial capacity will be 200 MW, which means 100-150 mid- size wind turbine gears per year. We will also continue with preparations for building up even larger capacity in the Midwest area, says Jukka Jaamaa, Moventas CEO & President.
At the moment, Moventas' wind gear manufacturing is concentrated in Jyvaskyla, Finland. The ultramodern facilities in Jyvaskyla will continue to manufacture wind gear key components also in the future, but the assembly and testing capacity for USA deliveries will be moved closer to the customers. In North America Moventas already has gear service facilities in Greenville (SC), Big Spring (TX), Portland (OR) and Cambridge (Ontario, Canada).
