Pacific Green, the pioneer of sustainable products from plantation coconut trees, has been certified Rainforest Safe by Rainforest Relief. This certification follows twenty years of Pacific Green producing Palmwood@ as an ethical alternative to rainforest hardwood.

Pacific Green (http://www.pacificgreen.net (http://www.pacificgreen.net) ) is based on the islands of Fiji, where it was set up at the start of the 1990s to find a commercial use for the islands' discarded plantation coconut stems. It built the world's first factory dedicated to the research of coconut palms and, using breakthrough processes, developed a consumer-orientated product, Palmwood (http://www.pacificgreen.net) @.

Palmwood is exceptionally hard and durable; testing confirms that it is comparable with conventional hardwoods. Pacific Green makes architectural products (including columns, cladding and flooring) and furniture. The exotic furniture (http://www.pacificgreen.net) line combines Palmwood with natural materials that are sourced from plantations or by-products from other commercial processes.

Rainforest Relief is an environmental organisation working to stop the destruction of the world's tropical and temperate rainforests, and set up its Rainforest Safe program to certify companies that avoid all wood from old-growth rainforests and other endangered forests. Rainforest Relief visited Pacific Green in Fiji and conducted a review of its operations, including the Palmwood sourcing and production processes.

Pacific Green's spokesman comments, "We are very pleased to be certified Rainforest Safe. It is testament to the care Pacific Green has placed in making our Fiji operation accountable to the local community and environment. Further to the certification, we are committed to demonstrating the ecology of our operations to the public, and will construct an Ecological Park at our factory in Sigatoka so that visitors can learn how we transform discarded plantation stems into products for global markets".
