AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Maine environmental regulators are considering a proposal to ban the chemical bisphenol-A from baby bottles, sippy cups, water bottles and other reusable food and beverage containers.

The Board of Environmental Protection is expected to hear testimony from parents, scientists, doctors, business owners and environmental health advocates at its hearing Thursday in Augusta. They say the chemical is a threat to the health of children.

Maine's Department of Environmental Protection has recommended that bisphenol-A, or BPA, become the state's first "Priority Chemical" under the state's Kid-Safe Products Act. If supported by the BEP, the proposal will then go to the Legislature for final passage.
