The American Chemistry Council spent nearly $1.8 million on second-quarter lobbying, focusing on clean energy and a renewable fuels standard among other issues, according to a recent disclosure report.

The chemical manufacturing industry's trade group lobbied on legislation dealing with renewable energy, climate change, a proposal to tighten food safety standards, and efforts to reduce mercury emissions and other issues.

The chemical manufacturing industry has seen a drop in demand for its products during the recession as consumers cut back on spending.

The council lobbied Congress, the departments of Interior, Health and Human Services, Treasury, Transportation and Homeland Security, the Office of Management and Budget, The National Security Council, The Surface Transportation Board, The Food and Drug Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency in the April-June period, according to the report filed July 20 to the House clerk's office.
