Defense contractor BAE Systems said it has opened a new design and prototyping center, the first facility at a new company campus in Sterling Heights, Mich.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) -- Defense contractor BAE Systems said it has opened a new design and prototyping center, the first facility at a new company campus in Sterling Heights.

The campus is part of a five-year, $58.4 million program and will include a renovated test track and 4-story office building. The campus, due for completion late next year, will house about 600 employees.

BAE, Europe's largest defense contractor, said in a release Thursday that employees at the new design center will work on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and other military vehicles.
