FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., August 12, 2010) - EPA has awarded $485,000 to the City of De Soto, Kan., for improvements to the drinking water system.

EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks said, “Clean drinking water is essential for both healthy communities and healthy economies in Kansas. These water infrastructure funds will partially fund the construction project which is estimated to cost $1.2 million.”

The purpose of the project is to replace pipeline constructed in the 1940s. The pipeline is a source of frequent breaks and loss of service. The loss of water increases the costs to ratepayers and each break has the potential to introduce contaminants to the drinking water.

EPA oversees the protection of water quality and public health. The Agency is working with community leaders and the public to meet the growing needs and demands of our limited water resources. EPA remains committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for managing and financing infrastructure with public and private partners.
