SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The California Assembly has voted to ban plastic baby bottles, sippy cups and baby formula containers that contain the chemical bisphenol A.
The bill by Democratic Sen. Fran Pavley of Agoura Hills targets any food or drink container designed for children age 3 and under.
Lawmakers approved the bill on a 41-31 vote Thursday. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.
BPA is commonly used in making plastics shatterproof and is used to line food cans.
Experts disagree about whether it is harmful to humans, but it has been restricted in a number of states, including Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Washington.
Supporters say a ban errs on the side of caution and protects the most vulnerable Californians.
