YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- A steel company is officially beginning work on a new Ohio mill talked up by President Barack Obama during an appearance last month.
A groundbreaking Monday at V&M STAR in Youngstown drew Gov. Ted Strickland and other officials. V&M's parent company is spending $650 million to add a 1 million-square-foot mill to its Ohio facility, a project the firm says will create as many as 750 temporary and permanent jobs.
Strickland said steel is not just a part of Ohio's history but also the state's hope.
The president was at the site in mid-May and said the project benefited from his administration's economic stimulus act, which provided money for a railroad spur to the area.
Obama said the region was getting its largest new industrial plant since the 1960s.
