Fort Wayne Tries To Keep Navistar Center

Officials are trying to persuade Navistar to keep its truck design center and 800 workers in the city after it dropped plans to move its operations to a Chicago suburb.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- Fort Wayne officials are working to persuade Navistar to keep its truck design center with more than 800 workers in the city after the company dropped plans to move its operations to a Chicago suburb.

Navistar spokesman Don Sharp says the company has stepped back from plans for consolidating its truck and engine testing sites in Lisle, Ill., where residents raised concerns about noise and safety.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance has made proposals to the company to move the engine center from Melrose Park, Ill., to Fort Wayne. Alliance president Andi Udris says the group will update its offer to Navistar.

Sharp says the company hasn't yet sorted through its options.
