Bacardi Installs Wind Turbines To Power Distillery

Rum giant Bacardi has installed two 137-foot wind turbines to help power its Puerto Rico distillery.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Rum giant Bacardi Ltd. has installed two wind turbines to help power its Puerto Rico distillery.

Joaquin Bacardi, head of the Bermuda-based rum company, says the pair of 137-foot turbines at the Catano distillery are expected to produce 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.

The company's statement issued Tuesday doesn't say how much of the plant's energy needs will be met by the turbines. Bacardi says it is the first industrial wind energy installation in Puerto Rico.

Bacardi is a family-owned spirits conglomerate founded in Santiago, Cuba, in 1862. All of its rums are made in Puerto Rico.
