AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- BorgWarner opened a new technical center in China this week, auto parts supplier said Friday.
The facility, in the Zizhu Science Park in Shanghai, will be the largest in the company's network of global technical centers within two years.
Chinese vehicle sales surged 45 percent last year, to more than 13 million, making China the world's biggest auto market. Sales are surging by double digits this year as more of China's population becomes middle class.
Automakers are shifting some operations overseas to meet demand.
Its expected to ultimately employ 400 workers who will work to research and develop engines and drivetrains,
BorgWarner is based in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Shares of BorgWarner Inc. rose 10 cents to $37.49 Friday.
