Report: Dow Chemical Leak Undetected For Weeks

Kanawha County Metro 911 Center report says West Virginia Dow Chemical facility leaked ammonia gas every day for nearly two weeks before the problem was detected.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A Kanawha County Metro 911 Center report says Dow Chemical Co.'s facility in Institute leaked ammonia gas every day for nearly two weeks before the problem was detected.

The report obtained by the Charleston Gazette says more than 3,500 pounds of ammonia leaked from the facility's ethylene oxide catalyst unit between Feb. 4 and Feb. 16.

Dow reported the leak to Metro 911 Wednesday afternoon, along with a leak at the company's South Charleston facility. The report says the chemical polyalkylene glycol was discharged into the South Charleston plant's waste treatment facility.

Dow spokesman Randy Fischback told the newspaper that the company had no other information. Fischback says the Institute incident will be reviewed.
